Thirteen Things Iron Chief Secret Ingredents For those of you who haven't seen the show let me explain. Each show started with the revealing of a secret Ingredent and every dish that is made has to feature and include that ingredent. Now the secret ingredent can pretty much be anything but it is almost always some rare and often strange food item that the average person in their kitchens wouldn't have a clue what to do with. So here is my suggestions for secret ingredents for the next season. After all every show needs a bit of a shake up from time to time. 1.... Kraft Macaroni and Cheese 2.... Mystery Cans When he pulls the cover off the secret ingredent he reveals a bunch of tin cans of various shapes and sizes. All of the labels have peeled off and the rule is that if you open it you have to use it. 3.... Klik / Holiday / Spam This one would be all about the presentation and the spam sculptures 4.... Whale Blubber The eskimos eat it. 5.... Left overs from the last three shows There always seem to buy way more food then they could possible need. 6.... Hobo We collected, cleaned and marinated five Hobo's for our judges dinning pleasure. 7.... Road Kill They collect it and it has to go somewhere 8.... The Rare White Rhino Only 14 or so left in the world so this meal is a once in a lift time experience 9.... Carmel Because it makes so many thing so much better. 10.. Open Flame Everything you make and serve must be cooked over an open flame. 11.. Ethnic Everything served must be an ethnic dish 12.. Child It's like veally good 13.. Vegan Everything you serve must be vegan

Thirteen Summer Musts 1.... Fire Pit Sundays We have a fire pit in our back yard as am sure my regular readers will know. Sunday is our Fire Day 2.... Bird's Hill Beach Sundays There is a small provincial park just outside of town and we often head out first thing in the morning and spend the morning in the water playing about. 3.... The Winnipeg Fringe Fest This is a relatively new passion for my family but its a great way to see some plays and other productions. If you town has a fringe festival you really should go. 4.... The Winnipeg Folk Fest An even new thing for us is the weekend long music feastival. 5.... Walks in the Park Nothing beats spending time walking in the park with family friends and the dog. 6.... Riding the bike instead of Driving Summer means riding the bikes when ever possible instead of driving the car 7.... The Drive in Oh wait they closed it. Apparently the 14 thousand members of the save the driving face book group didn't realize. If you don't spend money it will go away. 8.... BBQ If I have to pick between cooking on the stove and cooking on the BBQ the stove losses hands down. 9.... Yard Work As much as I dislike it some days it is important and does get me outside, which I do like. 10.... Frisbee in the Park Just throwing anything around in the park is a wonderful way to kill some time. 11.... Growing Herbs This is something I've never tried but hope to get a chance this summer. 12.... Writing in the Sun I have a lap top and love nothing more then just sitting out in the sun writing 13.... Doing anything in the Sun Have you noticed a theme here, I am a Sun worshipper

Thirteen Things that I need to do more of 1.... Spend time outside. I spend far to much of my day cut off from nature, at work the people closest to the windows even keep the blinds closed. 2.... Do More Exercise I get to the gym about three times a week on average for roughly an hour each time. Its just not enough for the weight lose I want to do. 3.... Writing I love writing and found I really enjoyed it during NANO, I just have to stop letting things distract me. 4.... Ritual Mine is a faith of doing and I find myself rarely doing more then talking and I don't like that fact. 5.... Proofing / Editing I hate proofing what I have wrote but I realize it has to be done. So am always trying to avoid it and it has to stop. 6.... Mediation This is something I have tried to do a few times over the years but it is something I've never quiet been able to make the time for on a regular basis. 7.... Spend more time with my Daughter My daughter is getting older and closer to the time when she will be moving out. There is a lot left to show her and I want to spend what time I can with her. 8.... Working on the Podcast This one is something new in my life but something I am excited about working on and really looking forward too. 9.... Reading I read a fair amount already but there are so many books on my shelf that call out to me sitting there unread. 10.. Spending more time with my wife She is a lovely woman who enjoy spending any time I can with so why not spend more with her. 11.. Eat more veggies This is traditionally the smallest portion on my plate and it should be the biggest. 12.. Eat more salad This one is pretty easy since for the most part I don't eat any salad. 13.. Spend more time on me

This week my Thursday Thirteen offers 13 tips that everyone can us. Keep this list in mind next time you have to call an 1-800 number or your local utility company for customer service.

Thirteen customer service tips for the customer 1.... If you are calling to dispute a charge or something on your bill have a copy of it with you for referral 2.... Before you call to dispute something make sure that you have read through it carefully. Nothing makes you look like a bigger idiot then to have the answer right on the bill. 3.... No matter how mad you might be don't take it out on the person you are talking to on the phone. Your likely upset with the company and have never even spoken with the Representative on the phone. All yelling at them will do is make them less likely to help you. 4.... Listen to the IVR (menu options when you first call in) it is there to help direct your call to the right department so you can get quicker service. If you just press 0 it's likely you will wait on hold get the wrong department and have to be transferred where you will have to wait on hold again 5.... If you are calling for information from them have something ready to write it down. Don't make the customer service rep wait while you go looking for paper and pencil that you knew you would need in the first place. 6.... Use the hand set not the speaker phone. Speaker phones are great while your waiting, but please pick up the hand set when you hear the representative. You call will go much faster if they can hear and understand you. 7.... You want your questions answered and the Representative likely has questions that he or she is required to ask you. Give them the chance to ask the questions they need to so that they can better answer yours. Also if they ask for your name, it is your name that they need not the name on the bill. (On average I have to ask for a persons name 2 - 3 times in a call) 8.... Know why you are calling, and be clear about it with the representative again this may seem obvious but surprisingly its not. 9.... Make sure your authorized on the account. Due to Federal/State/Provincial privacy laws you now have to be either the account holder or have authorization noted on the account to make inquiries. It doesn't matter that you have been responsible for it for 20 plus years and been the only one who calls in about it. It has to be noted if it is not we can't tell you anything it is the Law. 10.. Don't phone Drunk or High!!! Phone clear headed it may sound like a stupid guide line or thing to bring up, but at least once a week I get a call like this. 11.. Have the time to take to when you call. There are some processes and requests that just take time to do, it's not the fault of the representative or anyone else it just takes time. If you don't have it your just going to get frustrated and so is the representative. 12.. When reading Credit Card information don't rush, it is important that the Representative understands the numbers and gets them down correctly. If he doesn't you will likely have to call back and deal with billing problems. 13.. Treat the Representative like you would like to be treated when someone calls you at work, because that exactly what you have done. Use your manners and be polite in all honesty it will get you a lot further then yelling and screaming at them. I know speaking only for myself am much more likely to go that extra mile for a customer to treats me with respect.

Thirteen TV shows they should have made more of 1.... Kindred the Embraced A great show focused on Vampires in the modern world and closely based on White Wolf's Vampire the Masquerade. 2.... Space Above and Beyond Starship troopers meets Wing Commander in Space Above and beyond. 3.... Firefly No list like this would be complete without including Firefly on it 4.... Jake 2.0 A great spy show, its funny how they keep remaking this type of show. Its like Chuck in a lot of way, hopefully Chuck doesn't follow it to the grave. 5.... Greg the Bunny This show was just to funny to describe and makes me laugh every time I see. Blah! 6.... Dead Like Me 2 seasons just wasn't enough for this funny and thought provoking show. If you haven't seen it I strong recommend it 7.... Drive Nathan Fillion was in it and it ended in a cliff hanger that we never resolved. Otherwise the show sucked.. 8.... Rome I can't say enough good things about this show. Rome showed what the would have been like in that time period. Shame a fire torched all the sets. 9.... Harsh Realms I'll be honest I don't remember a lot about this show other then that I enjoyed it. 10.. Crusade This B5 Spin off never made it very far and had a lot of interesting potiental. 11.. The Invisible Man Another in a long line of average person turned Super Spy. Its such a popular concept that so rarely works out for anyone. 12.. The Tick The only Super Hero show to make the list. 13.. Undergrads The only cartoon to make the list. Please make a second season A special 14th show for this list that needs to be on this list is Angel. They announced the sudden ending of the show and left Josh scrambling to give it a fitting ending.

Thirteen Websites and Internet Things not to miss out on. 1.... betweentheticks.blogger.com How could you possible want to miss out on the excitement that is the life and times of me. Read what I think, Read about what am doing, Comment and offer your own suggestions and advise. You to could have your say in my life, how could anything 2.... Wikipedia It is the repository of all knowledge right or wrong and useful and useless. There is tons of great stuff and lots of Bull shit as well. So if you're just looking for information but are not to worried if it is right or wrong then check out Wikipedia. 3.... Yahoogroups and GoogleGroups I've lumped these together because they basically provide the same services. Massive lists of E-mail discussion groups that cover every topic under the sun, a number of them that likely couldn't be done under the son and many that you wouldn't want to. Both have there pros and cons and it really is a matter of opinion as to which you prefer more. 4.... Itunes and Pod Casting Power to the People and word to the masses. That's just what podcasting is doing, anyone is now able to set up there own podcast and get their word out to the people. Al Gore in his book the Assault on Reason (To be reviewed later) talk about the power of democracy coming from average people being able to communicate with everyone. Check out the podcast section, find a topic of interest and listen away. Personally I would recommend Deos Shadow, The Wigglian Way. But can't go wrong with downloading on and giving it a listen. 5.... Torrent Sites Am not going to link to any as there really are a number of good ones out there and you should check them out. They are a wonderful source of music, movies, tv shows games and anything else you might be looking for. Just Remember if you like it, Buy it or they might not make more. 6....Facebook I almost feel dirty even mentioning it on this list but lets face it, Facebook is here and its not going away. The other day at work I was walking across the call centre floor and I walked past one of the oldest CSR in my department. The one who complains loudly every time a new program is introduced at work, and she was surfing around on facebook like a pro. If she can use it anyone can, so if your haven't already made an account well you really should. Otherwise you might never find out what happened to that friend from elementry school who you haven't seen or thought of in 30 years. 7.... DIGG Digg.com is a repository of things other people find interesting and cool. So you never really know what your going to find, but you can be certain it will likely be different and worth a read. 8.... Webcomics There are so many different and really good webcomics out there that it would be impossible to list them all off. I find a new webcomic I enjoy about once every couple of months and am not even looking. Heck it would take a whole month Thursday 13's to list the one I like. I've already done one list like that listing my favorite 13. 9.... Reuters Reuters is a news service that a lot of different newspapers and tv stations use to get the news. So why not cut out the middle man and go straight to the source. 10.... Red flag deals Looking to buy something and want to find a better price, maybe get some feed back on it from people who already own it. Check out the forums at redflagdeals.com people are always offering suggestions, sharing information about pricing. They are working together to help each other save money. 11.... RPOL This is for all you games that read this blog. RPOL.net is a roleplaying site filled with hundreds of different roleplaying games that are being run with pretty much any system you can think of under the sun. check out the Players wanted thread and see what games are looking for you. 12.... Expert Villiage This little gem is for the how To person inside all of us. Hundreds of How To Videos on pretty much any subject you could be looking for. 13.... Your Website/blog/whatever Take a moment and reply to this thread and include a link to your website in your comments. Because well with out people like you reading this blog and making your own. I wouldn't have been able to list mine as number 1 on the list.

Thirteen Things I do to distract myself Sometimes it helps to know what your doing to distract yourself. So I made myself a list. 1.... RPOL It is an online roleplaying site where you can play by post. Its a great site lots of different games and gaming systems. There are tons of ways to distract yourself here. 2.... Chatting with friends Just chatting back and forth with friend by instant messager when I should be doing something more. 3.... Facebook A bigger time sink I don't think you will find. 4.... Surfing the Web Just randomly surfing the web and seeing where I end up and what I find. 5.... Reading a Book While it's important to read and reading is a good thing, sometime I do it to avoid doing something I should be. 6.... Watching TV / Movies A close second to facebook is the idiot box. It has the magical ability to suck time away from you without you even noticing if your not careful. 7.... Video Games These team up with the idiot box only they offer more interactivity 8.... Blogging I enjoy blogging and it is a wonderful writing exercise, there have been times when I have written a blog article instead of working on a project like I should be. 9.... Online Games Stupid little flash games, for the most part am good at avoiding them. 10... E-mails Checking my e-mails, many times a day in hopes of finding something interest 11... Read How to's Am a big fan of how to's and I even read them for the most part too. 12... Make to Do lists When I start working on things the first thing I do is make a list of things that need to be done. 13... House work ok I really don't do this to distract myself, but I needed a 13th thing

Thursday Thirteen #7

Thirteen Things about Summer I long for 1.... The Heat - After a week with a wind chill of minus 40 and longer I need things to warm up. 2.... The Sun - Ok so we see the sun in the winter, but its different almost impotent in a sense. I want the hot blazing sun back. 3.... My Neighbors - I have amazing neighbors, but we all disappear in to our houses come winter and rarely go out. 4.... Outside - Like my neighbors I to hide inside in hopes of staying warm when really what I want to do is go outside. 5.... The Chewie Feast of Goodness - Three years ago I got dentures due to really bad English teeth. Once my mouth was healed up We held a massive BBQ with much steak and meat that was dubbed the Chewie Feast of Goodness. It has become an annual event since then. 6.... The Festivals - Winnipeg and Manitoba has a lot of great festivals including a couple that all of you will get to hear a lot about over the summer. My personal favorite is the Winnipeg Fringe Festival, two weeks of theater, improve, poetry and great shows. The second one is the Manitoba Folk Festival a great music festival at Birds hill park. 7.... The Beach - I love to get out of the city for the afternoon and spend the day at beach with friends. 8.... Parks - Manitoba has thousands of little parks all over the province. I avoid them in the winter in search of warmth. They really are a lot of fun, Maybe I'll even go Geocaching again. 9.... My Fire pit - One of the first things we did for our home is to build a fire pit in the backyard. Its been the site of many great nights and will be for many more. 10.. Rain - Now the only moisture that falls from the sky right now is snow and am sick of it. I want rain that I can dance in. 11.. The Colour Green - Everything is white, or gray, or that dirty colour that snow gets through being driven on. I want to look out my windows and see the green field across the street and the green leaves on the trees. 12.. A warm Breeze - The only breeze we have in the winter is the one that makes things colder that we call wind chill. 13.. No Jackets, scarves, gloves - Every time I want to go outside right now its Heavy Jacket, Scarf, and gloves. Then we still hope to be warm enough and not feel the wind. In the summer I'll be wearing shorts and t-shirt and enjoy the breeze.

Its a day late because I was moving my blog, but at least it's done

Last week for my Thursday Thirteen I posted a list of thirteen things not to do as a Thursday Thirteen list. So by popular demand I'm turning the number one thing on last weeks list in to this weeks Thursday Thirteen list, enjoy. To the people who read this and have God, I applaud you and your devotion. I myself have discovered a wonderful connection with the Goddess and the God which bring be joy and happiness. The comments made in this list are for the people who have found God and feel the need to tell me about it in order to help me find him too.

Was the Goddess there too? No then you better keep looking then. 4.... So are you like an archologist or something? 5.... I'm happy for you. 6.... Really, can you find my keys too? 7.... You had to look? Isn't he like everywhere? 8.... I could have told you where to look 9.... So how is she anyways? 10.. Are you sure its the right one? There are so many now a days? 11.. Ahhhh you looked in the mirror did you? 12.. Which one? 13.. Congratulations, but your really don't have to tell me about it you.

Thursday Thirteen #5

My thirteen favourite movies in order In my list I have included series as if they were single movie. Since many of them are or t least they share some amount of continuity. Oscar Alright I expect some comment on this being my #1 favourite but I love this movie. I laugh so hard every single time I watch it. I can be dead tied crawling in to bed and catch the start of it. Am out of bed in a flash to go watch it. I laugh so hard I cry in parts. Star Wars the whole series No comment need Andromeda Strain A great story of what might happen V (The Mini Series & Final Battle) The only made for TV movie to make the list. Aliens arrive on earth offer everything we could possibly want. But of course there is a hidden price. A follow up book is scheduled to be released in February Harry Potter They have successfully made enjoyable movies out of a wonderful series of books without losing out on to much. Apple Seed The only true anime to make the list. The world is at war and has been for a long time. Out of that a new city arises from the ruins. But the leaders of the world, come to some less then ideal solutions. From the Hip Again a movie from my childhood. A lawyer and a friend fake a victory to get him a high profile job. Only have him land a really high profile murder case. In which his client has hired him based on his fake performance. Matrix (The Series) Live action Anime, at it's best. James Bond (The collection) This doesn't need any explanation, its 007 Megaforce A horrible movie from my childhood. I was so excited to find a copy this paste year and when I watched it that night I loved every minute of it. What the Bleep do we know A powerful movie that can completely change the way you view the world and your place it in. 5th Element I have the track from the opera singer on my MP3 player and enjoy it every time I hear it. Also the scene between the monk and Zorg in his office is one to remember. Empire Records This is one of the few movies that my kids have both watched more times then I think I can count using all of our fingers and toes. Yet I still enjoy it each time I watch it. Damn the Man! and save the Empire!
